FAQ

A Brief History of Salt

Throughout recorded History, Salt has made an important contribution to everyday life throughout the World.
Crystal Salt, the type used in creating The Salt Of The Earth Salt Lamps, and Natural Salt Tea Lights, was also called “King Salt” because it was reserved strictly for royalty. The common citizen was only given Rock Salt. Crystal Salt was more valuable than Gold. In ancient times, those who had access to Crystal Salt also had access to power.
Whether as a simple Spice or a Curative Element, Salt has had a place at dining tables and in Medicine since the beginning of time. Both Sea Salt and Rock Salt were well known to the ancient Greeks who noted that eating salty food positively affected basic body functions such as digestion and excretion. The healing methods of Hippocrates (460 BC) especially, made frequent use of Salt. A mixture of Salt and Honey was applied topically to clean bad ulcers and salt-water was used externally against skin diseases and freckles. Hippocrates also mentions inhalation of steam from salt-water. Today, the Medical community accepts the anti-inflammatory effects of inhaled Salt fumes and notes that they provide relief from many respiratory ailments.
So, over 2000 years ago, Greek medicine had already discovered topical applications of salt for skin lesions, drinking salty or mineralized waters for digestive troubles and inhaling salt for respiratory diseases. Soon after, the formal Medical community incorporated it into many of its medicinal formulations.
Salt Caves, located in Europe,The Balkans and Asia, deep below the Earth’s surface, have been used for over 1000 years for Speleotherapy (also known as Halotherapy: Halos being Greek for Salt). The process, in which the health seekers surround themselves with the Natural Salt in the caves, and stays there for between 3 hours and several days, has been cited for curing Respiratory illnesses such as Asthma and Bronchitis as well as for bringing fast relief to Sinusitis and Allergies. Some of these Salt Caves are so elaborate as to earn the distinction as Spas for tourists. With walls and floors made entirely of Salt, with tables carved from Salt, and even delicate Chandeliers made from Salt Crystal, the magnificence of man’s creativity is quite remarkable.
By far the most common use of Salt? Table Salt, of course. This is the single biggest selling spice in the World. As a flavoring agent, no cook would dream of preparing a dish without it. Salt is used in Cooking and Baking to such a degree that Annual salt production has increased over the past century from 10 million tons to over 200 million tons today. Nearly 100 nations have salt producing facilities.

What Is Natural Salt ?
Natural Salt is just what it sounds like. This is Salt that has not gone through the many processing steps that are taken to bring it to the typical kitchen table.
Natural Salt is found in ancient evaporated seabeds underneath great mountain masses, such as the Himalayas, where it has been compressed over time to form solid salt rock, with all the minerals structurally intact.
There are 88 known elements present in pure Himalayan Salt: Hydrogen, Lithium, Beryllium, Boron, Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Fluoride, Sodium, Magnesium, Aluminum, Silcum, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Chloride, Potassium, Calcium, Scandium, Titanium, Vanadium, Chromium, Manganese, Iron, Cobalt, Nickel, Copper, Zinc, Gallium, Germanium, Arsenic, Selenium, Bromine, Rubidium, Strontium, Yttrium, Zirconium, Niobium, Molybdenum, Technetium, Ruthenium, Rhodium, Palladium, Silver, Cadmium, Indium, Tin, Antimony, Tellurium, Iodine, Cesium, Barium, Lanthan, Cerium, Praseodymium, Neodymium, Promethium, Samarium, Europium, Gadolinium, Terbium, Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium, Thulium, Ytterbium, Lutetium, Hafnium, Tantalum, Tungsten, Rhenium, Osmium, Iridium, Platinum, Gold, Mercury, Thallium, Lead, Bismuth, Polonium, Astatine, Francium, Radium, Actinium, Thorium, Protactinium, Uranium, Neptunium and Plutonium.
These same 88 elements are present in our bodies in the exact same proportion as in Himalayan Salt. We find that fascinating…another mystery of the Creation.

What Is Different About Natural Himalayan Salt ?

In our search to find the most beautiful Salt from which to produce our collection of Salt Lamp Creations,The Salt Of The Earth Salt Lamps we searched far and wide. From Poland to Austria and from China to Turkey, our search ended up at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas in Pakistan. Here we found Salt with the broadest range of colors and natural striations that we could have imagined. From off White to Light Pink, from Peach to deep shades of Orange and even to Crimson Red, a veritable rainbow in terms of the more bland colors of Salt we had seen elsewhere. The great variance in colors helps make every Salt Lamp Creations Salt Lamp, and Salt Tea Light, a unique piece of Natural Art.
An added bonus to these coloration is that Himalayan Salt, particularly from the Gola Valley (where Alexander the Great led one of his many conquests) is unlike any other Salt we have ever encountered as it glimmers when hand chipped and glistens when lit from within. Many Himalayan Salt Lamp companies pressure wash the lamps after they have been carved. This creates an almost plastic like finish to the water absorbent Salt Crystal. You might notice our lamps have a small amount of what appears as powdered Salt on the exterior. When illuminated you will be amazed at how this “residue” sparkles! Feel free to wipe it off with a damp cloth if it bothers you…we let you decide!

Where Are The Salt Lamps Made ?

Salt Lamps come from Salt Mines deep beneath the Earth’s surface at the foothills of the Himalayas in the Gola Valley.

Here Salt is in its purest form and is carefully mined to extract the most beautiful rough slabs for the production of Salt Lamps and Salt tea Lights.
Our miners do not use explosives to remove the salt from the walls of the mines. As they have for centuries, the laborers remove the Salt with Picks and Axes to reserve the Natural beauty of the Salt and to provide large enough slabs from which the Artisans Carve and shape their lamps. Our facilities do not employ children and the workers are paid living wages and are given health benefits equal to or exceeding those afforded any other worker in Pakistan.

Why Make Lamps From Salt ?

About 10 years ago, as a “Natural” extension of the use of Salt for a myriad of different purposes, the people who run the Health Spas and tours in the Salt Caves of Poland thought that it would be a great idea to offer a Salt Lamp in their Gift Shops as a memento of the visitors’ experience.
Since then, as marketing experts got their hands on them, many claims about the healing powers of Negative Ions generated by Salt lamps have helped create a market where none existed before.,
The Salt Lamps inherent beauty, which is our main attraction to them, combined with some questionable medical documentation have propelled this small idea into a huge International market.
Negative Ions (sounds bad, but negatively charged Ions are better than positively charged ones), help keep the air clear of Dust, Dander and other airborne respiratory irritants. You experience the “positive” effect of Negative Ions when in a thunderstorm or walking near a waterfall. The fresh pure air is invigorating!
The Sharper Image Catalog and stores have been promoting Negative Ion Generators (with names like Ionic Breeze at $200) for years and the jury is still out on their effectiveness.
What is known is that Natural Salt does help with skin conditions and probably every one of us has taken a bath or soaked in Epsom Salts. Natural Salt has been clearly shown to “cure” warts, skin tags and reduce the visible effects of eczema and psoriasis.
While many Salt Lamp sellers now promote their Salt Lamps as a cure for “all that ails you”, we like them because they are beautiful and because they make such unique gifts. Any added benefit you receive from having one in your home or office is certainly a plus.

What Is a Salt Of The Earth Salt Lamp ?

A Salt Of The Earth Salt Lamp begins as a natural slab of Salt stone that comes from the Salt mines of the Gola Valley at the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. Each Salt Lamp Creations Lamp includes a base plate, UL approved Power Cord with On/Off switch a Light bulb and care/cleaning instructions. How are the Salt Lamps Created ?
The Natural Salt used to produce our Salt Of The Earth Lamps comes from the mines in Khewra and the Gola Valley, used for Seasoning Salts since the days of Alexander the Great. From deep below the surface of The Himalayas, the Salt is removed in large pieces weighing up to 1000 pounds each.

The Mined Salt is separated by Size, Color and Quality
A hole is then drilled to accommodate either the Light Bulb or Candle

The cored Salt is given a preliminary inspection, a quick wash, and sorted again
Mounting our exclusive EZ-Change Light Assembly™ to the bottom of the Polished Hardwood Base gives you a safe, quick and efficient way to remove and replace the Light Bulb. We encourage you to compare these to other lamps offered for sale.
The lamps are given a final inspection, wrapped and boxed for delivery to the USA
